Loving Decision Conference 2007: The Next 40 Years of Multiracial Communities
CHICAGO, IL – Actress, Singer, and Dancer Nia Peeples will speak at a special extravaganza hosted by Kevin "Squishy Man" Barber on Friday, June 22nd (7:00-9:30 PM) at the Chicago Center for the Performing Arts. It will be an entertaining night of comedy, dance, poetry, live music, book readings, film and more.
Tickets to the gala will cost $18 for the general public (first come, first serve) but will be free for all registrants of Loving Decision Conference 2007, an international conference from June 21 - 24, 2007 coordinated by The Association of MultiEthnic Americans (AMEA) to mark the 40th anniversary of Loving v. Virginia (1967), the US Supreme Court’s decision to legalize interracial marriage..
Nia Peeples has had a successful career in entertainment for over two decades spanning film, television, music, dance and even stunt work. She appeared on Fame and Walker, Texas Ranger as well as hosted Top of the Pops and her own video music program called The Party Machine with Nia Peeples. Nia has also topped the music charts and appeared in a number of feature films. Currently, she is a regular on TV’s most popular drama, The Young and the Restless.
Nia Peeple’s maternal grandparents are both immigrants from the Philippines. Her father has Scottish, Irish, English, Native American and Italian ancestry. Her mother is of Filipino, German and Spanish descent. R20;This is a great opportunity for people of any race, religion, or cultural upbringing to embrace and celebrate the power of uniqueness. I am honored and excited to be a part of the Loving Decision Conference,” says Peeples.
Comedian Kevin "Squishy Man" Barber will be hosting the Extravaganza event on June 22, 2007. Kevin has been recognized as one of the foremost experts in multiracial relations, speaking and research. He is not only a comedian, but is still a licensed therapist in Missouri and Kansas. His focus is on multiracial children and the struggle they still have today. He was also the president of Multiracial Family Circle of Kansas City from 1996- 2000. In 2000, he spoke at the National Multiracial Conference at Harvard University.
This conference means a great deal to Kevin "Squishy Man" Barber not only because he is multi-racial himself, but also because his parents could not get married when he was born in 1967 because it was against the law in Missouri. His mother (who is white) and father (who is black) had to cross the state line to Kansas to marry. If you would like more information on him, please visit his website at www.squishyman.com.
For more information about the Extravaganza, please contact Jummy Bullock at 818.2302285. To learn about the conference, including registration and a full schedule of events, please visit www.lovingconference.com.
