The Loving Decision Conference will be held June 21-24, 2007 hosted at the Mansfield Institute for Social Justice on the campus of Roosevelt University in Chicago, IL. This international event is being coordinated by the Association of MultiEthnic Americans (AMEA) with organizing efforts from many affiliate organizations and allies in the U.S., Canada, and partnering countries. For the first time in U.S. history, this event wishes to bring together not only “interracial” couples, “multiracial/ethnic” individuals, and “transracial” adoptees, it also intends to unite students, families, policy makers, educators, celebrities, businesses, and advocacy organizations representing all communities.
A much needed dialogue is welcomed as we enter the 40th anniversary of the 1967 Loving v Virginia Supreme Court decision which ended the legal ban on interracial marriage in the United States. This historical case not only raised issues about intermarriage between “whites” and people of color in this country, but it also grappled with the complexities around “race” that are still being confronted by this diverse population today. Furthermore, as the issue of legalized marriage is still being prohibited in the 21st century upon other communities, what questions might we still need to address in the U.S. and elsewhere? Is there such thing as a “multiracial” community, and if so, who makes up this community? Or, is it a community that can even be defined?
This conference will be a monumental event that seeks to educate, entertain, and bridge connections between all key players and communities in society toward bettering relations in the 21st century.
We invite works from a wide range of topics that might include:
- Identity Formation (Beginners to Advanced)
